Animated series

04/12/2019

Not only in real life there are left-handed people, but also in the animated series we can find characters that usually use predominantly the left hand. Perhaps, the best known of all is Bart Simpson. This young rebel, eldest son of Marge and Homer Simpson, was created in 1987 by the American cartoonist Matt Groening - by the way, is also left-handed - and has been considered by the American magazine Time as the forty-sixth most influential character of the twentieth century in A list of one hundred.
Another character in this series who is also left-handed is Ned Flanders, owner of the left-handed shop called the Zurdorium (Leftorium is his original name in English). Flanders, a neighbor of the Simpsons, is characterized by being a devout and compassionate Christian whom Homer does not hold in very high esteem.
Also, Mr. Burns - his full name is Charles Montgomery Burns - seems to be left-handed or, at least, mostly uses his left hand in his appearances. This decrepit old man, owner of the Springfield nuclear plant where Homer works, is the richest and most powerful citizen in the city. Forbes magazine calculated in 2008 that its fortune reached 16.8 billion dollars.
Groening also included some left-handed characters in his Futurama series. One of them is Bender, the robot cook of the interplant messenger company Planet Express, which was manufactured in Tijuana (Mexico) in 2997. Misanthrope, sociopath, alcoholic and kleptomaniac becomes the best friend of the series' protagonist, Philip J Fry, who also usually uses the left hand. This young pizza delivery man, who lives in 1999, accidentally falls into a cryogenic chamber and is frozen until 2999, the year he wakes up and starts working as a deliveryman at Planet Express.
In the series Family Guy (Family Guy, in English), we find another left-handed character: Chris Griffin, the second son of the marriage formed by Peter and Lois. Chris is a teenager who is not very savvy, worried about the typical things of American boys of his age, such as female sex, personal image, including overweight, high school, etc. Generally speaking, he is a calm character with a simplistic personality. The actor who gives voice to his character in the original version describes him as "a clumsy manipulative, distracted and strong social".
Within the children's series we found the pig Peppa Pig. The protagonist of British cartoons regularly uses her left "leg" to pick up objects. The series was released in the United Kingdom in 2004, but did not begin airing in Spain until 2010. Peppa Pig lives with his parents (Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig) and his brother George and the plots of his episodes usually have the family home as a stage principal.
In the past there were also cartoonists who created left-handed characters such as Scooby-Doo, a great Dane devised by the Hanna-Barbera Productions factory, absorbed in 2001 by Warner Bros. The name was given by the melody “Doo-bee-doo-bee -doo ”from the song by Frank Sinatra Strangers in the Night. The dog in question is the pet and companion of adventures of Shaggy Rogers, with whom he shares his cowardice and his constant appetite, two characteristics that they lose each time they go out in search of villains.
If we go back further, specifically to the 1930s, we find the character of Betty Boop, a sensual flapper girl - it is the anglicism that was used at that time to designate women who did not wear a corset, wore short skirts and Bob haircut and listened to unconventional music like jazz - created by Paramount Pictures with a tendency to wink his left eye and say hello by raising his left arm.
In the field of video games, in The Legend of Zelda we can find Link, a young warrior, hero of dangerous adventures, who does not hesitate to wield his sword with his left to help Princess Zelda.
